So, I've been playing a Harvest Moon game and romanced a character who has stopped aging. My character convinced him that it didn't matter that she would age while he didn't, because even when she passed on, she'd still be there with him, in his heart, meaning they'd be together forever. It got me thinking about the relationship between Spike and Buffy. I know a lot of people end up either making Spike human or figuring out a way for Buffy to become immortal (honestly, she'd probably live a long time anyway with slow aging just due to her enhanced healing, though she would eventually grow old and have her systems shut down due to it), but I like the idea of them staying as they are. Spike un-aging while Buffy does. Spike knows he's going to eventually lose her, no matter what, and Buffy knows that if she isn't killed in battle, she'll grow old while Spike stays the same. I like the dynamic of that and the possible ways it could impact the characters. I have a pair of companion stories that play a little bit with it: archiveofourown.org/works/16273469 and archiveofourown.org/works/16273514How do the rest of you feel about the concept? Do you prefer them to have the same lifespan/aging or the way things are?

For stories that look forward in time (which isn't many of them), I like to slow down or stop Buffy's aging. But whether it is or is not addressed, I approach it with the firm belief that the two of them are likely to die in battle (for the last time) eventually, probably together. Give her immortality (or something akin to it), or take away his, or do nothing on that point. It doesn't matter. Those two are going to go down in the Buffyverse version of a hail of bullets, anyway. They're warriors. Getting old and feeble and dying in their own beds isn't who they are.

That's very true. They're both going to go down fighting. I just happen to like the idea of Buffy doing it at about 110, all white-haired and looking like she's in her seventies or eighties.

I've read a couple of fics set far in the future when Buffy is an old lady and Spike is still by her side. I can't for the life of me remember the titles or authors though.
While I don't think either of them would mind if Buffy grew old, as far as their relationship goes, I think Buffy would hate it just from her own view. I think she'd rather go down in her prime fighting a big bad. I could be wrong but that's how I see it. She went on and on about "normal" but I think once she hit her mid-twenties she'd be over that bit of silliness and would embrace being the Slayer. Normal is boring and way over-rated.

I honestly don't like immortal Buffy, and I don't think she'd like that either. She hates that she's been brought BACK to life, even, so she'll probably get to the point where she intentionally takes on more than she can handle.
I do see her aging more or less normally, though. Yeah, there's healing factor, but also so, so, so much more stress than the typical person deals with.

That's a good point, about the added stress adding to the aging factor.

I kinda feel like I've written my answer to this in Ripples on a Hellmouth.... I will come back to comment here after it's fully published.

I enjoy a lot of stories with an immortal Buffy, I just prefer writing it with her not immortal. Just like how I have no interest in writing a story where Spike ends up with the Ring of Amara. To me as a writer, both of those things make it too easy. For me as a reader, though, I'll read those things and enjoy it, if its an author I love, since they're likely to pull it off well.
