Steven Universe has a butt-ton of characters at this point, and many of them have only been seen once or twice. Even so, many of the gems (and humans) that barely get screentime have shown depth and hints of effort beyond what we ultimately get to see. I've seen countless stories focused on the Famethyst, for example, or the Off-Colors, exploring the traits we might not get to see otherwise. Every story I read shows similarities and differences, much of which I've never considered before. This is the kind of thing that fascinates me, speculating about characters we may (or may not) get to see again in the future.
Do you guys have any headcanons concerning the minor characters of Steven Universe? Here's one of mine for now:
The Famethyst - Hoo boy this one's massive in my head. I hope I can make it coherent.
To start with, Quartz gems seem to have a sort of pack instinct, for the most part. Their first instinct, as seen when Pink Diamond watches the Amethysts emerge, is to find their sisters and join them. They were even shown waiting for our Amethyst to emerge before they had to leave her behind. Thousands of years later, when Amethyst reunites with her "sisters", they get along and even help her, despite being Homeworld gems. Sure, it's possible that Holly Blue's treatment of them would have made them feel less than loyal toward Homeworld, but I don't think that's it. The Diamonds can be even worse, after all.
We know the Amethysts were created first. We've seen Pink Diamond head to the prime kindergarten to welcome them to Earth. Having been made "properly", they also take up the bulk of the survivors in the group (assuming here that only the Earthmade gems present actually survived - I know we see more Amethysts and Jaspers on Homeworld but I believe these gems were made elsewhere and were never affiliated with Earth or Pink Diamond). Then we have the beta kindergarten that was rushed, made in a less-than-ideal location, and full of defects. Only a handful of Jaspers (about five) and a single Carnelian seemed to have made it out of the war alive.
The Carnelian, like our Amethyst, is overcooked. Being in the ground too long seems to make gems' default forms shorter and maybe a little thicker than normal. She's taller than Amethyst and would have emerged before her despite 8XM being from the prime kindergarten, so she was able to be present for the war and thus taken off the planet with the rest of the Homeworld forces. Then we have Skinny the Jasper, who is the opposite. I tend to think she was undercooked and popped out of the ground before the other beta gems. With the beta kindergarten being so poorly managed, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that she'd been alone in that canyon for who knows how long before the others started emerging. She seems a little stand-offish compared to the other gems, leaning against the wall and snarking good-naturedly about prime kindergarten gems being "cliquey", though she's still an obvious part of the group. We also see that Amethyst asks her about the where-abouts of Carnelian. It seems like she played a sort of big sis role for the beta gems, perhaps especially for Carnelian with her being the lone survivor of her gem type and a fellow off-color. Not supported by canon, but I'd like to think this role extended toward the prime kindergarten gems too, since none of the Amethysts have shown themselves capable of handling responsibility.
