Hag stones (also known as hex stones, holey stones or Odin's stones) are quite simply a stone that has a naturally formed hole in it that is thought to provide protection against witches and magic. They can be hung over the door or windows, or placed on an outside windowsill to protect a dwelling. Farmers would also place them near the barns and stables to protect their livestock. It is also said that looking through them gives you the ability to see pixies and other mystical creatures that are otherwise invisible to the human eye. They can be worn around the neck as protection from the 'evil eye' and placed under the mattress or rubbed against the painful area to help ease rheumatism and other aches and pains. It is also possible to create a hag stone as protection against a specific witch by forming her face in clay and making a hole through the back by which to hang her.
