Is the Gem War and the influence of an alien civilization on Earth general knowledge?
Pink started invading the Earth around 6000 years before the events of the show, and the Rebellion ended 4500 ago. So between 4000 BC and 2500 BC (if that is the correct calendar), an alien civilization had an ubiquitous influence on Earth. They built facilities all over the world, changed the shapes of continents and waged war against on another for a thousand years. Contemporary human cultures would have been shaped by their presence - especially at such a transitional stage. In our world, this was a transition period from the Stone Age to the Bronze Age, we see the emergence of writing, cultural expansion and trade. Does that still happen? What changes? And whatdo contemporaries of Steven know about this period of history?
The citizens of Beach City certainly don't seem to display any knowledge of an alien invasion shaping their world history. They're not surprised by the presence of the Crystal Gems, whom they're used to, but at first they don't seem to know what they are, what they do, or even recognize them as mythic figures. Yet the many archeological traces of the Gems' presence must be known - the structures, the art, the advanced technology... And we see that the American bills have a diamond symbol.
So is the Gems presence a long forgotten myth or an established historical fact?

And in regards to the diamond symbol on the money, it took Ronaldo a while to get the idea that maybe sentient rocks were secretly ruling the world, so it's likely it's not even really a crazy fringe theory. We know that some of the Crystal Gem missions are about finding and bubbling corrupted gems, but what if other missions are simply to erase any trace of Gem activity on Earth? I could easily see Rose making an effort to erase as much evidence of the Gems as possible.

They do go into that one pyramid and end up destroying it. I actually miss seeing those missions, the ones where they have to head somewhere and find something that isn't a monster. Have we even seen the gems fight a corrupted monster since Peridot's first bubbling? I can't remember, at this point. It's been all about Homeworld for quite a while.
I do have a headcanon that no one on Earth speaks English - it's all Gemese. XD Writing systems are different, though.
In the episode with the Gems/Pizza family beach party, it seems like the Pizzas never even knew the temple was there on the beach. Obviously, people like Jamie knew, and Connie, but we rarely see humans other than those two and Greg near Steven's home.
For the most part, the townies seemed to know there were a handful of "magical ladies" but that was the extent of their knowledge. Nowadays, the gems seem to be interacting more with the city, so it's possible that the alien invasion is now common knowledge. I don't think the gems ever went out of their way to hide themselves, but only Rose and Amethyst seemed to actively want to be anywhere near humanity in their free time.
Back during the war thousands of years ago, though, I think about everyone knew. They had to in order to know what they were up against. Humans fought in the war, too, hoping to protect the Earth and stop the kidnapping and destruction of their people.
I don't think the gems have deliberately altered the Earth since the war. There are certain artifacts and monsters and the like that may have attacked or influenced an area, and of course there's still remnants of the failed colony, but the Crystal Gems seem to be trying to clean everything up, even thousands of years later. I wonder what they'll do when they finally manage to gather up all the corrupted gems and cluster experiments and any trace of gem tech...
