This month, our short fic for Book Club is Between the Empty Places by St. Ephiny. I hadn't read this one before now, so I'm glad I got the chance through our book club. I really loved Buffy standing up for herself. And as much as I love Dawn, I was definitely glad to see her put in her place. She is a CHILD. She doesn't get to kick her legal guardian out of the house. None of them do, since it's Buffy's house. The only one with any legal right to kick anyone out is Buffy herself.

I hadn't read it either, and found it oh so satisfying. Thought the description of Kennedy was particularly accurate. Loved Dawn being sent to bed, as you said. Loved that Spike didn't need to come barging in and say anything in her defense, just be there in that silently understood way 💙

It was a great read. Halfway through I wanted to kick everyone out of the house myself and was silently screaming for Buffy to grow a pair. Then Spike just being in the house gave her the needed fortitude to take control of the situation, as she should have, and say what needed to be said. I was cheering

Yeah, right there with you, Black. I was cheering, and I loved the fact that Spike didn't confront them at all. He was just there as quiet support. I always hated that scene, and the only person I ever gave a pass was Xander, since he was both suffering the loss of a major sensory organ and probably on medication. It's hard to really make good choices when on the pain meds he'd need for his eye.

The strangest one to support the 'coup' was Anya, but she could also be chucked to 'resentful over losing her powers... again'

That and Xander getting hurt. Also she's not really been on good terms with Buffy since loosing her powers again - I don't think they've even talked all season, and they were never close, unfortunately.
I'd actually read the story before. It's part of a short series of independent stories where Buffy gets to knock some sense into the Scoobies, stand up for herself and finally say what we're all thinking. If I remember correctly, this is the Spuffiest, but they're all pretty good.
